How to Run a New Verification (VOB)

A Verification of Benefits (VOB) checks a patient's insurance eligibility and benefits directly with their payer, so your admissions team can make faster, more confident decisions, including after hours and on weekends when payer phone lines are closed. This article walks you through starting a new verification.

 Before you begin

Have the following ready:

  • The patient's member ID
  • The patient's first name, last name, and date of birth, exactly as they appear on the insurance card
  • The insurance company (payer)
  • The date you want coverage checked (the as of date)

Start a new verification

  1. Go to the Verifications page.
  1. Click New Verification.
  1. Confirm the Facility. It is pre-filled with your account's default facility. If your account supports it, you can choose a different one.
  1. Select the Insurance Company.
  1. Enter the Member ID, First Name, Last Name, and Date of Birth.
  1. Confirm the As of Date. This is the date the benefit request is based on.
  1. Submit the verification.

Your verification appears at the top of the Verifications page, and the results open as a single, consolidated VOB.

Good to know

  • Your facility matters. Facility details are included in the request, and your facility's business type determines which service types (such as mental health or hospital outpatient) are checked and displayed.
  • Only active payers are listed. If you can't find a payer in the dropdown, it may no longer support electronic eligibility checks. Contact Support if you think this is a mistake.
  • Speed varies. Most verifications finish in a few seconds, but response time depends on the payer.

Tips for accurate results

  • Match the name and date of birth to the insurance card exactly. Small spelling differences can cause the payer to return a different result. See VOB Discrepancy Alerts.
  • Double-check the member ID for typos.
  • Select the specific payer that issued the plan rather than a similarly named one.
